Highly skilled and well-qualified chemists are in demand by industry. The MSci Chemistry degree allows you to combine the rigours of bachelors and masters level modules into one integrated undergraduate package, and develop the advanced practical skills, knowledge and technical capability to work towards becoming a senior chemist. The applied nature of this Chemistry degree will prepare you to enter jobs in areas such as environmental monitoring and quality assurance, and in industries from food manufacture to textiles, materials processing and medicinal products testing.
The MSci Chemistry course focuses on current research and development areas within the chemical industry including catalysis, modern materials and their applications, molecular modelling, advanced organic synthesis, and compound analysis and characterisation. You will learn from experienced lecturers and researchers how these exciting areas of chemistry and chemical science apply in the real world by providing new materials and medicines. You will study for a PRINCE2 Foundation qualification in project management, which is valued by employers of chemical scientists, and conduct a major laboratory research project in a current area of science.
Years one and two of this course follow the same programme of study as our accredited BSc (Hons) Chemistry degree. You will study various modules and gain practical laboratory-based work in our state-of-the-art laboratories.
In year three, the MSci Chemistry course specialises in more advanced subject areas. You will study new areas including the concept of ‘chemical activity’ and its relationship with molecular structure, mechanisms in organic synthesis and their involvement in biosynthesis, natural product chemistry and medicinal products.
In year four you will study for a PRINCE2 foundation qualification (additional costs apply). This is an internationally recognised project management qualification, which is a great addition to your CV. You will also undertake a major laboratory-based research project from a broad range of available research subjects, and have the opportunity to work with senior academics in their fields.
In years one to three of the MSci Chemistry degree, modules will run simultaneously and will be taught via a mix of lectures, tutorials, workshops and laboratory based practical classes. In year four, you will study certain modules in short blocks where intense learning is required, whereas other modules are studied throughout the academic year. Self directed study plays a part in all modules, and is supported by the University’s virtual learning environment.
In year four, modules are taught through the block-mode approach, meaning study is more intensive, and is focussed upon one module at one time. The research project is usually taken over the summer in year four.
Assessments will include a variety of practical reports, essays, oral presentations and examinations. Most modules are assessed continuously throughout the year, and by an end of year examination.
Our chemistry facilities are on a par with those found in industry. Students make full use of the laboratories during their studies and gain hands-on experience using the extensive chemical equipment. We have dedicated organic, inorganic and physical chemistry laboratories, as well as several instrumentation laboratories.
You will also have access to the laboratories and instrumentation in the University’s Sustainable Environment Research Centre which include ultra-high performance liquid chromatograph tandem mass spectrometers, ion chromatographs and headspace gas chromatographs.

All fees are per year. Once you have started your course, your fee will remain the same for each year of study.
Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.
|Kit (Uniform and Equipment)||
Students are strongly encourged to equip themselves with a suitable cotton laboratory coat suitable for working in a chemical laboratory, and a pair of personal protective laboratory goggles. Students who are successful in securing an industry-based project may be required to purchase additional personal protective equipment as specified by the specific organisation or company for the place of project conduct. There is a potential cost involved in binding both third year and fourth year project dissertations.
Students gain access to specialist laboratory equipment and facilities to conduct their practical work and in years 3 and 4 to conduct a major research project. All consumables agreed by the project supervisor as required for the projects are included within the tuition fee for this course. A PRINCE2 foundation course and training materials costs are also included within the normal tuition fees for the MSci. Please note that students who successfuly secure a placement in industry to complete their major research project would be expected to pay for their own travelling costs to and from the venue during the period of placement. The cost of this will of course vary and some students have also paid for accomodation close to their place of work for the duration of their placement. Students are provided with reading lists but are not expected to buy any books, instead students are actively encouraged to make use of the extensive learning resources of the University. Many books are available as ebooks. The course uses the many computing facilities of the Glyntaff campus (students are not expected to buy their own computer but having a personal PC will help with their studies).
