MSc Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine (Online delivery)

Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine is a rapidly evolving branch of medicine involved in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, coronary heart disease and peripheral vascular disease. This online Masters course in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine is designed to be practical and clinically focused and will focus on applying scientific principles to direct patient care. Year One

Students progressing from the PG Diploma course do the one-year MSc consisting of the following modules:

Core

  • Research Methodologies and Critical Evaluation in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine

This module will address the terminology and methodologies used in epidemiology and research studies, and you will learn how to interpret graphical and other statistical data such as Kaplan-Meier Curves, Forrest Plots and Meta-analyses. You will develop an understanding of the importance of evidence based practice and how to apply it within a clinical setting.

MSc: Two-year duration

Students who decide to enrol directly on to the MSc (rather than the PG Dip) will do the two-year version, which consists of the following modules:

Optional modules

This module aims to develop an ability to critically evaluate areas of professional practice of your choice and develop skills in independent research and study. You will produce a report of 12000 words which will include a project proposal of 1,500 words and the remaining 10,500 words will consist of a literature review and an evidence appraisal, clinical or organisational practice audit. It will also involve the implementation of evidence-based practice and undertaking qualitative or quantitative research. As part of the module you will be in regular contact with your tutor who will offer guidance and supervision either via email, telephone or SKYPE.

  • Independent Prescribing Module (taught at University)

This module aims to prepare students, both academically and practically, for the role of independent prescribing. The module also meets the registration criteria for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Synopsis of module content:

  • Consultation, decision-making and therapy, including referral.
  • Influences on, and psychology of, prescribing.
  • Prescribing in a team context.
  • Clinical pharmacology, including the effects of co-morbidity.
  • Evidence-based practice and clinical governance in relation to nurse prescribing.
  • Legal, policy and ethical aspects.
  • Professional accountability and responsibility.

Teaching

Each of the modules is taught online and includes self-directed learning, tutor stimulated discussion on case scenarios, examinations, group projects and independent projects. Reflective practice is also studied which involves considering how you can apply the knowledge gained into everyday work and practice.

Assessment

Assessment methods will vary for each module and include case-based examinations, discussions and scenarios, reflective portfolio, forum discussions and group activities.

The Independent Prescribing module will be assessed via completion of Formative and Summative assessments.

Facilities

As part of your online studies you will have access to the Learning Resources Centre materials at the University of South Wales. FINDit is the University’s portal which allows you to search for over 13,000 full-text journal articles, news articles, conference proceedings and approximately 160 databases via one search box- the majority of these materials are accessible online. Interactive study skills modules are available to study via Blackboard to enable you to utilise the library services fully.

Course Director
Having completed a MD in vascular biology, Dr Dev Datta now runs a cardiovascular risk factor and lipid clinic and the lipoprotein apheresis service in Wales. He is also a medical lead for the Welsh Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Service.

  • Entry to the one-year MSc programme will require the successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine (120 credits) either from the University of South Wales or from another UK University.
    Alternatively, students may apply for the MSc as a two year course, completing all 8 modules (180 credits).
  • Applicants without recognised qualifications but have relevant work experience, background knowledge and skills will also be considered on an individual basis.
  • English language qualification (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent)

Please note: entry requirements for the Independent Prescribing module differ from the other modules and require:

  • 3 years post registration experience
  • 1 year in field of practice
  • Support of Line manager
  • Requirement of current role for IP status
  • Availability of a mentor

Fees

The PGDip and MSc in Preventative and Cardiovascular Medicine courses are run in conjunction with a partner company and do not attract standard university fees. The fees for 2016/17 are £3,780 for the MSc in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine, for both home and international students. Additional costs apply should you choose to attend the one day induction course at the University of South Wales or in South Africa, which include travel and potential residential costs.

Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.

Our Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine MSc course has been developed for GPs, Secondary Care Trainees in Diabetes, Vascular Surgery, Cardiology, Medical Biochemistry, Allied Health Professionals and Practice Nurses running CV clinics who wish to develop their skills in this area of work. Our course is pioneering and focuses on preventative cardiovascular medicine rather than on cardiology. You will be one of the first to attain a recognised qualification in this area.
