MSc Management

Whether or not you have a management and business background, the MSc Management will develop your broad knowledge of contemporary management through a detailed exploration of the theory and practice of key areas. This postgraduate course will help you deliver best practice in the workplace, whether that is private, public or third sector, and enable you to motivate, inspire and manage effectively.

The MSc Management course offers you the opportunity to study across a broad range of business disciplines and functions. Through a tailored programme of study, you will learn to think critically about how businesses run, while also gaining an insight into why organisations are structured and function in a particular way. You will also examine changing trends in strategic thinking to develop a holistic understanding of how organisations interact with their environments in the face of rapid and discontinuous change.

The variety of modules available will not only help deepen your understanding of the nature of business, but will also give you an opportunity to learn more about your strengths and the areas of business that interest you most. You can focus on your study needs and goals by selecting modules from a range of specialist management and business areas.

You will explore broad management disciplines and the relationship between organisations and their environments, studying a total of 180 credits.

Modules of study include:

  • Leadership and Management Theories
    Develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of leadership and management theories and their contemporary application in a range of organisational settings.
  • Issues in International Management
    Develop a critical awareness of the complex interrelationships between developing issues in international and trans-national management.
  • Innovation Management
    Gain an understanding of the theory and practice of managing innovation in organisations. You will learn about the frameworks used by organisations to manage innovation and sources of innovation inside and outside the organisation.
  • Strategic Operations Management
    Gain an appreciation of operational processes, techniques, planning and control systems with reference to both manufacturing and service industries from a qualitative and quantitative perspective.
  • Research Methods
    Conduct a proper scientific investigation and present it in a written format. This will develop your understanding and research skills in a management and/or professional development context.
  • Dissertation
    A significant piece of research into an appropriate area of study.

Teaching

The emphasis of the course is developing your professional skills in order to equip you as an attractive manager to companies. This is achieved via a varied lecture and seminar programme with extensive group work, case studies and guest speakers from a variety of backgrounds. Key skills are embedded within modules and related to relevant assessments as appropriate. Examples of this would typically include written coursework such as essays, case studies and posters, as well as oral presentations and examinations.

Assessment

Assessment is through coursework-based assignments, as well as oral presentations and examinations. The final assessment is a management project, in which you will examine an area of management that is of interest to you or a company-based project.

Management Development Centre (MDC)

If you have significant managerial experience or qualifications from a professional institute (such as CMI or ILM) you may be eligible to study the fast-track MSc Management at our collaborative partner, Management Development Centre Ltd. The course runs twice a year in the Spring and the Autumn.

To be admitted for the MSc Management course, candidates will normally be required to have a minimum UK 2nd class honours degree or recognised international equivalent qualification. Relevant work experience can also be taken into account and all applicants would be considered on an individual basis.

In all cases, the University will satisfy itself that a candidate is of the required academic standard to complete the programme of study proposed and is able to meet University’s English Language requirements. English language requirements for international students are a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall or equivalent TOEFL score, or other evidence of English language abilities at this level.

Full-time fees are per year. Part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee will remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course.

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.
