MSc International Business and Enterprise

The MSc International Business and Enterprise course brings together the internationalisation of business and the importance of enterprise to examine the theory and practice of international business, including how exports, franchises and foreign direct investment (FDI) are analysed and developed.

Through a diverse range of modules, and a field trip to a major European city, you will be exposed to all areas of business. You will explore the effects of culture and climate, and develop an understanding of the market environment that will aid the creation of business ventures. You will examine local-global interactions in a range of areas, including the local embedding of multinational corporations and global supply chains. You will also study the nature of the global environment, the complex and unpredictable variables that exist and how these can be analysed.

  • Economies, Markets and Decision Making in International Contexts
    Develop the ability to solve problems which relate to management decision-making in the context of changing economic and market conditions.
  • Innovation Management
    Gain an understanding of the theory and practice of managing innovation in organisations. You will learn about the frameworks used by organisations to manage innovation and sources of innovation inside and outside the organisation.
  • Globalisation of Logistics and Supply Chain
    Delve into the activities of global and international logistics and supply networks – identifying trends and key drivers for the globalisation of industry and its impact on the development and management of the logistics and supply chain.
  • Entrepreneurial Start-up
    This module will equip you with the knowledge of how to start and develop a business venture. You will develop the tools needed to critically appraise the complexities of successfully starting and growing a new venture in a turbulent and ever changing society.
  • Research Methods
    Conduct a proper scientific investigation and present it in a written format. This will develop your understanding and research skills in a management and/or professional development context.
  • Strategic Entrepreneurial Marketing
    Critically examine the key elements of strategic marketing and its interface with business strategy.
  • Issues in International Management
    Gain a critical awareness of the complex interrelationships between developing issues in international and trans-national management.
  • Entrepreneur in a Global Environment
    You will be introduced to the various principles and structures of the current environment of global business and how it can be analysed. You will also learn about how the internationalization of businesses can occur.

Teaching

The MSc International Business and Enterprise course team are a group of highly experienced and well qualified academics with an extensive portfolio of international research, consultancy and applied industrial experience. They pride themselves on the close relationship they maintain with the student group. As a student you will be treated as an individual and your personal learning requirements will be met and monitored throughout the programme.

In addition to the you will have the benefit of guest lectures in the Entrepreneurial Start-up module which will allow you to gain an insight of setting up or working in a small or medium sized enterprise. Such involvement creates opportunities for informal mentoring and networking to take place between MSc International Business and Enterprise students, practicing entrepreneurs and professional bodies. The entrepreneurs have set up businesses in areas such as Manufacturing and Design, Marketing, Fashion, Hospitality and Catering, Record Labels, Film Industry, Sports and Fitness etc. Businesses range from social enterprises, small local businesses, to national and international businesses. You will also be encouraged to attend the many guest lectures organised by the Business School, to broaden your understanding of important subject areas.

As an MSc International Business and Enterprise student, you will be given the opportunity to obtain free student membership from the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs (IOEE). The IOEE is a not-for-profit professional body within SFEDI. Student membership will give you access to a range of resources and potential mentoring support through the Institute. It is also the first step to becoming an Associate Member, ideal for anyone who wants to start their own business.

Assessment

You will be assessed through written assignments, examinations and/or project work. The MSc International Business and Enterprise involves the completion of a significant Management project, developing your communication, research and consulting skills.

Lecturers

The course team are a group of highly experienced and well qualified academics with an extensive portfolio of international research, consultancy and applied industrial experience.

They pride themselves on the close relationship they maintain with the student group. As a student you will be treated as an individual and your learning requirements will be individually met and monitored throughout the programme.

All the course team are active researchers and their knowledge and experience is used to enhance and supplement the teaching experience. They are also members of the Centre for Enterprise which represents the largest research group in the Business School. The WEI aims to broaden knowledge of the role of entrepreneurship, innovation and small business policy within a local, regional, national and international economic setting.

A minimum 2:2 Honours degree, or an equivalent qualification, or in exceptional circumstances, three or more years’ significant managerial experience.

Applicants may be required to attend an interview.

All fees are per year. Once you have started your course, your fee will remain the same for each year of study.

Additional Costs

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.

Cost of trip £500. Students will be expected to pay for normal expenses whilst away e.g. lunch, evening meals, social activities, etc.  Approximately £150. International students would also need to pay for the travel expense to apply for the visa in London.

Costs may be incurred while completing sandwich year if chosen . Costs associated with travel and expected workplace attire will vary according to the placement. Year 3 only.
