Designed to meet the ever-increasing demand for knowledge within the global football market, the Masters Degree in Advanced Performance Football Coaching provides the optimal combination of professional and evidenced-based academic training for coaches, heads of coaching, performance analysts, fitness coaches and indeed all those associated with performance player pathways.
This is the first coaching course of its kind in Wales and complements the extensive undergraduate football courses offered at the University of South Wales. The Advanced Performance Football Coaching course has been designed by USW sport academics and significantly informed by external partners, including the Football Association of Wales Trust and Swansea City Football Club. The applied nature of the content, delivered by experts in the field, including Premier League and International levels coaches and support staff, offers access to rarely-shared knowledge, and enhances employability through professional development and industry readiness.
This unique football coaching course is delivered through a combination of face-to-face teaching (during residential visits) and guided online learning to offer flexibility of study and make it accessible to international students and industry professionals. There are three exit points for this course, which means you can study for the Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or the full MSc.
You will develop an in-depth advanced analysis of pertinent issues relating to football coaching and performance and develop a critical appreciation of the role of the modern-day football coach and how their practice impacts upon the football environment. What’s more, you will develop a reasoned appreciation and critical understanding of wider tactical, technical, physical, psychological and social issues related to football practice to not only enhance knowledge but also to further professionally develop.

One of a number of FAW courses we offer, this football coaching course is taught by industry experts and the teaching methods used include lectures; seminars; work-based learning; practical workshops and scenarios; project supervision; question and answer; group task work and both directed and independent study.
The MSc Advanced Football Coaching and Performance course in structured to work in sync with those already working within the football industry in that there will be two compulsory five-day residential study blocks (during October and May) held at USW Sport Park, and one optional five day residential in December/January.
In between this, students will study additional modules online, with students being able to build their study load around their work/life demands. USW has a heritage in modes of online study and as such recognise the role and value of student support. Structured learning support includes an induction to welcome students to USW and allow students to acclimatise into Higher Education study.
All students will be allocated a personal tutor to offer academic and pastoral support throughout their study. Tutorials are offered both in person whilst on residential or via video conferencing platforms, when studying from distance; progress meetings are held informally within each module and more formal meetings held at each stage of study i.e. PgCert, PdDip and MSc. Individual supervisors are provided to each student for their research projects. With a high level of expertise across all functions of football related and sport science fields, USW is well catered to meet individual student needs.
This football coaching course is based around ‘reality-based’ assessments, i.e. assessments that are linked to the skills and demands of the football industry. This ethos not only ensures an applied approach to assessment but further refines the student skill-set. Students will be assessed via essays, but also via oral presentation; video analysis; reflective portfolios; practical coaching sessions; opposition analysis reports and player profiling to name a few.
We have a brand-new specially designed sporting performance facility that focuses on rugby and football coaching. It includes a specialist centre for strength and conditioning with 12 lifting platforms, providing a high performance environment for aspiring athletes. Our full-size indoor 3G pitch is built to the Fifa Pro standard and World Rugby 22 standard. It will guarantee training all year round for our rugby, football and coaching students. We are the only university in England and Wales to offer this facility.
You'll also find a notational analysis suite and over 30 acres of playing fields, including five floodlit pitches. We have a sand-dressed 'astroturf' pitch, as well as a full-size FIFA approved 3G pitch. In addition to these all-weather pitches, there are six grass football pitches, three grass rugby pitches, and a large changing pavilion. Our facilities are regularly used by international professional teams, such as the Wales national football team and Cardiff City Football Club, as well as the touring New Zealand, South Africa and Australia rugby squads. This confirms the high quality of our pitches and the versatility of our equipment.
Upper Second Class sports related Degree or related industry experience.
Applicants must hold a valid UEFA B License or equivalent qualification. (E.g., NSCAA, AFC)
Fees apply to new students starting a course in the academic year indicated. Full-time fees are per year and part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee will remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course. USW Postgraduate Bursary is available for new UK and EU students starting an eligible course. International Scholarships are also available for self-funding international students.
Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.
