Want to study Mathematics at university but don’t have the grades? The Foundation route is designed for applicants who do not meet the admissions criteria for our BSc (Hons) Mathematics degree. This additional year focuses on key material from A-Level Mathematics, its applications and a number of more advanced topics.
The Foundation Maths course will involve a large number of contact hours with Mathematics staff to ensure you are properly supported. Successfully passing the Foundation year guarantees you entry onto the first year of our BSc Mathematics course where you will build upon and apply the knowledge gained during the Foundation year. On this Foundation year, you will study advanced topics in mathematics and its applications to best prepare you for success on a Mathematics degree. In particular, you will learn about methods in calculus, vectors and matrices, complex numbers, mathematical proof, mechanics, probability and statistics and mathematical computing.
The following years are in common with the BSc Mathematics degree.
You will also be introduced to specialist mathematical software that will be used throughout your Maths degree.
This Maths course is taught through a combination of lectures, practical classes, workshops and tutorials averaging over 12 hours of contact time with staff each week. Your understanding of the material introduced in lessons will be reinforced through independent learning outside of scheduled classes.
You’ll be taught by active researchers and practising mathematicians, which ensures you are exposed to current real-world problems, methodologies, and industry-standard techniques and software.
You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, phased class tests and formal exams. The assessment strategy is designed to provide you with regular feedback on your work so that you can identify your strengths and weaknesses and therefore allow you to develop into an all-rounded mathematician.
USW’s Mathematics degree is accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), the UK’s learned and professional society for mathematics and its applications.
You won’t be confined to the classroom during your studies at USW. Students
have enjoyed charity field trips to Uganda to teach mathematics and interact with pupils, as well as opportunities to engage with local school pupils who visit the University for events and revision conferences. These are great opportunities if you want to inspire young people in mathematics, or if you’re thinking about a career in teaching.
As part of your Maths degree, you can spend up to a year in the workplace as part of your course. You can also take part in live projects and taster weeks, or choose a shorter three-month placement. Work experience can help with your final-year studies and will look impressive on your CV – plus you’ll have relevant experiences to talk about at interview.
Practice is so important in gaining understanding of complex mathematical techniques, which is why we have two student workrooms dedicated to our mathematics students. These facilitate a learning environment where you can work individually or in groups and as they are located next to the staff offices you will have no problem finding help if you get stuck.
In industry, computing power is now vital to aid complex Mathematical calculations on a daily basis. Therefore throughout their Mathematics degree, students will be exposed to a variety of key industry computer packages to facilitate their learning. Those available include core mathematical packages such as Maple and MATLAB; invaluable statistical packages: SAS, IBM SPSS Statistics and R; as well as sought-after Operational Research techniques including optimisation through FICO XPRESS IVE, modelling in Stella and Simulation in Simul8. Students will also be taught sought-after programming skills in Python.

Full-time fees are per year. Part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee will remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course.

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.

Many also progress to further study or research at postgraduate level.
