Topping up to a BSc (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering qualification is a great way to increase your specialist knowledge and skills. Taught full-time (direct entry) or part-time for those already in employment, the top up Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree allows you to select options to specialise in either electrical power engineering or electronics engineering.

You will have the opportunity to undertake significant project work. This can be industry based from your own workplace, which could be of great benefit to your employer. Past students have used project work as the opportunity to identify organisational efficiencies, make cost savings and to influence their long-term career plans by acquiring the relevant skills.

Teaching

The Electrical and Electronic Engineering course is delivered through a range of lectures, seminars and practical workshops as well as guided independent study. Independent learning skills are a critical aspect of the degree, and this enables graduates with the ability to develop new skills throughout their careers.

Assessment

Assessment methods include assignments, coursework and examinations.

Facilities

Our industry-standard facilities help you make the transition from the classroom into an employment setting. We have three suites that include an IoT/Embedded Systems lab, General Electronics lab, and Power and Renewable energy lab.

Our embedded systems lab contains 25 high-end terminals that run cutting edge development tools that have been designed in conjunction with our sponsor, Renesas – the world’s leading supplier of microcontrollers. This sponsorship means our students are taught using the most up-to-date technologies and development tools.

The general electronics lab is split into three sections – State of the Art Computer Aided Design (CAD) that include Matlab and Etap simulation software, IoT/Embedded Systems, practical electronics, and communication engineering.

You will learn how to use industry-standard software, construct prototypes, build and test printed circuit boards and use a range of equipment such as oscilloscopes and signal generators. In the communication engineering section, you will undertake experimental set-ups to support your understanding of theoretical principles. These set-ups include analogue and digital modulation schemes, microwave antennas, time and frequency division multiplexing, coding, transmission lines and fibre optics.

The power and renewable energy lab is where you will learn about the key components and construction skills involved in planning, designing, building and testing electronic circuits which are used in micro renewable energy systems. You will design and simulate your very own renewable systems, analyse performances and produce feasibility reports. Equipment you will find yourself using includes a Photovoltaic solar energy, Wind energy experimental stations and Lab-Volt stations.

Relevant HND, foundation degree or equivalent.
 

International Entry Requirements

International applicants will need to have achieved an overall IELTS grade of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component or equivalent recognisable English language qualification.

 

Fees apply to new students starting a course in the academic year indicated. Full-time fees are per year and part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee will remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course. USW Postgraduate Bursary is now available for new UK and EU students starting an eligible course in 2018-19. International Scholarships are also available for self-funding international students.

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.

Graduates of our Electrical and Electronic Engineering courses pursue a career in electronics, computing, electrical engineering, communications or control systems and embedded systems. As a USW Electrical and Electronic Engineering student, you will have access to advice from the Careers and Employability Service throughout your studies and after you graduate.

This includes: one-to-one appointments from faculty based Career Advisers, in person, over the phone or even on Skype and through email via the "Ask a Question" service. We also have extensive online resources for help with considering your career options and presenting yourself well to employers. Resources include psychometric tests, career assessments, a CV builder, interview simulator and application help. Our employer database has over 2,000 registered employers targeting USW students, you can receive weekly email alerts for jobs.
