BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering (Including Foundation Year)

Our foundation route into Civil Engineering allows you to build up the knowledge and confidence to progress into undergraduate study and develop key skills for success in the civil engineering industry. The foundation year will prepare you for the BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering degree, providing you with amazing opportunities for careers in the civil engineering profession.

You will have the right practical and academic training in areas such as structural design, geotechnical design, project management, highway and transport engineering, and sustainable design and development. You’ll gain knowledge of fundamental engineering principles, as well as IT skills. Using industry-standard software, you’ll learn how to apply these skills to engineering problems through design and project work. There are practical field courses in the UK, and you’ll be encouraged to complete a work placement as part of your studies.

Teaching

The Civil Engineering degree offers a combination of theory and practice, so there is a balance of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. Many modules require coursework only, while others are a mixture of coursework and exams.

Project modules are based on ‘live’ schemes, supported by guest lectures from professional engineers and, where appropriate, field courses are included to consolidate the knowledge gained in class and help you apply it in real-life situations.

This Civil Engineering degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). Our accreditation from professional bodies ensures that what you learn relates directly to industry standards. See www.jbm.org.uk for further information.

Assessment

Assessment methods include assignments, coursework, class tests and presentations. Presentations are included as elements of assessments in some modules, in order that key communication and presentation skills can be developed.

Accreditations

This BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering degree is accredited by the JBM on behalf of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institute of Highway Engineers and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation. This course provides you with a full educational base for progression to Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status.

Facilities

The University of South Wales has excellent facilities, and is committed to investment and refurbishment. We’ve just completed a £130m investment programme in new buildings and facilities.

The University has also announced a further investment of £28m to ensure that you’re using equipment and software that is state-of-the-art and industry-standard. We continually evaluate our labs and teaching spaces and regularly re-fit and re-equip them. A recent refurbishment of a number of our Civil and Mechanical Engineering labs is part of this programme of continuous enhancement of our facilities.

In general, international applicants will need to have achieved an overall IELTS grade of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component.

Full-time fees are per year. Part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee will remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course.

Additional Costs

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.
