Using industry-standard equipment and software, the University of South Wales’ Sound Engineering degree will give you the practical skills and essential for a successful career in sound. During the first year of your sound engineering degree, you will learn recording and sound engineering techniques and practise live sound, the use of computers in music production and the basic building blocks of electronics.

In year two, you will build on your audio engineering, recording and production skills, and start to experience live sound in a working venue. You will also learn about the sound industry and be equipped to deal with contracts, copyright law and running a small business.

The final year of the sound engineering degree involves a major group project, working with students from other creative courses. You will refine your production skills in recording engineering and learn about the acoustics of performance spaces. You will also experience the recording and development of sound design for film and television. Final year students can choose to specialise in one of four areas: music production, computer-based music production and advanced sound synthesis, computer-based media production or electronics design for music.

Entry criteria detail typical offers but USW considers all applications on an individual basis which means that we could make offers based on qualifications, personal profile and experience. Combinations of qualifications are acceptable and other qualifications not listed may also be acceptable.

This course requires an interview. As part of your interview, you’ll need to bring in a track which you have worked on as engineer, songwriter or producer. This should be presented as either a Logic Pro X project, Pro Tools session or stereo mix on a USB pen drive.

Additional Costs

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are significant additional costs either obligatory or optional these are detailed below.
