Our Sports Coaching course has been designed in consultation with the national governing bodies of a range of sports and local authorities, to ensure it reflects current industry standards and developments. A distinct part of our Sports Coaching degree is the opportunity to gain invaluable coaching experience with a number of key partners, including the national governing body of your chosen sport, local authority or schools.
The BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching course provides you with six modules per year with optional modules in your second and third years. These optional modules are provided to help you direct your studies in-line with your interests. Embedded within the practical modules you will have the chance to complete a series of leaders awards and coaching qualifications in a number of sports which will broaden your practical experience and knowledge.

There are a variety of teaching methods used which include lectures, seminars and practical sports classes. The learning experience is varied to accommodate different types of learners and include tutor lead presentations, pairs/group activities, problem solving tasks, discussion groups and student lead practical sports sessions. In your second and third year you will complete work-based learning modules which will be managed through weekly tutorials and a mentoring programme.
The environment in which you will be taught is challenging but presented in a professional and supportive manner by enthusiastic tutors and lecturers. Andy Thomas is the course leader and you will have access to our USW Sport Park which provides an excellent environment for you to study and develop your coaching skills.
You will be assessed through a range of activities including; coaching, peer coaching, group discussions, debates, case studies and in-class projects.
Each module will have a minimum of two assignments which can range from written assignments, presentations, practical delivery, class tests, exams, reports and poster presentations.
Our facilities are regularly used by international professional teams, such as the the touring New Zealand, South African and Australian rugby squads. The £3.7m USW Sport Park has been designed to train and develop our students to their highest potential. The Park is home to dedicated strength and conditioning facilities and state-of-the-art teaching rooms. The sports hall includes a national-standard six badminton court with sprung floor. This complements our excellent outdoor facilities of 11 pitches – including five floodlit pitches, a new artificial training pitch and 3G rubber crumb floodlit football pitch.
We have invested significantly in the development of performance analysis, and the notational analysis suite at USW SportPark features cutting-edge technology that will enable students to analyse coaching effectiveness and performance, in both a laboratory and a field-based environment.
Entry criteria detail typical offers but USW considers all applications on an individual basis which means that we could make offers based on qualifications, personal profile and experience. Combinations of qualifications are acceptable and other qualifications not listed may also be acceptable.
In addition a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check is required (additional cost applies, no offences are considered spent).
BCC A levels to include one Science, Mathematics, Physical Education or Psychology but to exclude General Studies

All fees are per year. Once you have started your course, your fee will remain the same for each year of study.
Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are significant additional costs either obligatory or optional these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.
This fee includes £44 for the enhanced DBS certificate, the Post Office Administration fee and the online administration fee.

Throughout your studies you will have numerous opportunities to participate in practical coaching sessions and engage in a sports specific placement in a location of your choice.
This Sports Coaching course is designed to prepare you for a career in sports coaching in a variety of roles that could include: participant coach, school coach, community coach or working within the sports development industry. Alternatively graduates will be provided with the skills that will allow them to work within the health and fitness industry, strength and conditioning, performance analysis or further study as a physical education teacher.
As a USW student, you will have access to advice from the Careers and Employability Service throughout your studies and after you graduate.
This includes: one-to-one appointments from faculty based Career Advisers, in person, over the phone or even on Skype and through email via the "Ask a Question" service. We also have extensive online resources for help with considering your career options and presenting yourself well to employers. Resources include psychometric tests, career assessments, a CV builder, interview simulator and application help. Our employer database has over 2,000 registered employers targeting USW students, you can receive weekly email alerts for jobs.
