Internships, a creative bootcamp, a live brief for Adidas and more...

This term has been packed with opportunities for Advertising Design students to engage with industry through guest lectures and live briefs.

“It’s really important that students get the opportunity to engage with industry from day one," said Lee Thomas, award leader for the Advertising Design course. "That’s why we work so closely with industry both locally and further afield, both as part of the assessed curriculum, but also additional projects for students to get stuck into.”

“Being based in Cardiff presents even more opportunities for our students, as there are so many great agencies based right here in the city centre.”

What a term!

Cardiff agency S3 Advertising sent their CEO Matt Jones to talk to our students, resulting in a number of internships for final year students, and a live brief for second years.

There have been two visits from global agency Isobar. Becci Salmon, a graduate of USW's Advertising Design course, now working at Isobar in London, talked about the company (now a global agency employing around 4000 people) and the work they do with big brands including Kelloggs, Sony and Google Play. Becci set the whole course an exciting one-day brief for Adidas, one of their clients.

D & AD (Design & Art Direction) with whom Advertising Design has won numerous awards in the past including two prestigious ‘pencils’ in 2015, also paid a visit to the students to talk about the awards they run as well as the ‘New Blood’ event in July which students will be attending to meet industry.

Another visit came from YCN (Young Creative Network) with whom Advertising Design has also won awards e.g. the Syfy UK award in 2015. They offered advice on current briefs the students are working on as well as information about their awards.

Six final year students attended a five-day Creative Bootcamp in London, working with agencies Wieden and Kennedy, and Mother. Only a few universities were selected to take part in the event, including USW and Universities in Europe and America.

Coming up

Next year promises to be just as busy. Bristol-based agencies Epoch Design and Indicia will be reviewing student work and offering professional portfolio advice.

There’s a guest lecture from the marketing director at Yolk Recruitment, and Hello Starling, a Cardiff-based agency are visiting to deliver a one day brief and again later on in the same month to deliver a talk about creative futures.
