BA (Hons) Advertising Design

The Advertising Design course at the University of South Wales produces the creative directors, art directors, brand managers, copywriters, digital designers, planners and strategists of the future. One of only a few specialist Advertising Design courses in the UK, this course will give you the opportunity to develop the creative and technical skills, and the ability and confidence to work in the fast paced and constantly evolving world of advertising.

You will study a wide range of topics and develop extensive skills in copywriting, creative direction and strategy development, as well as designing campaigns for all forms of traditional and new media advertising. Studying Advertising Design in Cardiff, you’ll be a part of our creative community and have the chance to collaborate with other creative industries students such as photographers, artists and musicians.

Year one focuses on developing your ability to generate new and innovative ideas and concepts and to solve a variety of communication problems. Workshops are complemented by introductions to a range of technical skills, and supported by a programme of classes that will explore the theory of advertising and media culture.

In year two you will begin to apply your creativity to a number of ‘real’ advertising situations by working directly with clients and professional agencies. Students always thrive on the experience of collaboration, and rise to the challenge of meeting professional expectations. This year also provides the opportunity to participate in our Erasmus European exchange programme, or undertake work experience.

Your final year is regarded as a professional year in which you are able to apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired during the course. Students are challenged by both national and international design competitions and all benefit from further opportunities to meet professional designers.

Teaching

Advertising Design is centred on creative ideas, technical skills, and an understanding of contemporary culture. You will work in an exciting and constantly changing area of design, exploring the areas of art direction, copywriting and strategy development, as well as designing campaigns for all forms of traditional and new media advertising.

Our partnerships with design industry leaders provide you with an inspiring programme of visiting guest lecturers developing your professional practice with live and competition briefs alongside workshops with practicing designers.

Assessment

Throughout the Advertising Design course you will be assessed on both practice-based modules and written assignments. You will receive clear and detailed feedback that will help you reflect on, and further develop your strengths.

Placements

We recognise the power of connections, and throughout your three years with us, you’ll have numerous opportunities to engage with creative agencies, both locally and in London. This may be in the form of a live brief, an industry visit or a guest speaker. Some of our recent briefs have been for clients such as Snow + Rock, Cadbury’s, BBC Worldwide and Exterion Media.

You’ll also have the opportunity to enter industry competitions including D&AD New Blood Awards and YCN Awards and follow in the footsteps of our many award-winning students.

The entry criteria below shows the qualification range within which the University will make offers. Most offers we make are at the top of the range, but we take all aspects of an application into consideration and applicants receive a personalised offer. Combinations of qualifications are acceptable and other qualifications not listed here may also be acceptable.

Interview

An interview and portfolio are required for this advertising course. Your portfolio should demonstrate strong artistic and design abilities. Your portfolio should be a carefully constructed selection of your work, preferably produced during your most recent course of study, and can include any personal work or projects that you feel are relevant to the course.

All work should be well organised and presented.You should be prepared to discuss your work and any designers and or artists who have influenced you.

Typical A-Level Offer

BCC - CDD to include a relevant art and design subject (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).

Typical Welsh BACC Offer

Pass the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Diploma with Grade C/D in the Skills Challenge Certificate and BC - CD at A Level with a relevant art and design subject (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).

Typical BTEC Offer

BTEC Extended Diploma Distinction Merit Merit - Merit Merit Pass in a relevant subject (this is equivalent to 112-80 UCAS tariff points).

Typical IB Offer

Pass the International Baccalaureate Diploma with higher grades of between 655-445 to include a relevant higher subject (this is equivalent to 112-80 UCAS tariff points)

Typical Access to HE Offer

Pass the Access to HE Diploma with 60 credits overall – the credits should equate to between 106-80 UCAS tariff points (examples below)

45 Level 3 credits equating to 15 Distinctions, 24 Merits and 6 Passes in a relevant subject (106 UCAS Tariff Points)

45 Level 3 credits equating to 12 Distinctions, 6 Merits and 27 Passes in a relevant subject (80 UCAS Tariff Points)

Additional Requirements

The University normally requires a minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics and English at Grade C or above, or their equivalent but consideration is given to individual circumstances

In general, international applicants will need to have achieved an overall IELTS grade of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component.

Additional Costs

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense.
