Peer-to-peer coaching is so valuable

Tom Smith, FLT student

Sheffield Wednesday’s Tom Smith is studying the Foundation Degree Community Football Coaching and Development.

"Three times a year, we get together for our practical sessions and assessments at the Sport Park. It’s good to interact with the guys from the other clubs, like Huddersfield, Birmingham City and Grimsby.

The peer-to-peer coaching sessions, where we each run our own 15-minute lesson with the rest of the group, are a great way to learn. I always go home with new knowledge and techniques.

My ambition is to coach at an Academy Club or be a PE teacher, so this course is perfect as I am gaining coaching qualifications and experience.

I do lots of work in schools and out in the community. It’s an amazing feeling to see young players develop as a result of what you’re teaching them.

The person I’d most like to coach...

Steven Gerrard. Why? So I could teach him not to be sent off after 40 seconds!"
